Monsoon flu increases hospitalization risk for children and elderly

Influenza, or flu, is caused by four types of viruses that circulate year-round but spread more during monsoons and winter due to temperature fluctuations. Children can contract the virus, and the entire household may contract it. The flu virus infects the nose, throat, and lungs, leading to hospitalization and death in children under 5 and elderly individuals. Complications include bacterial pneumonia, ear and sinus infections, and worsening medical conditions.

The 4-in-1 flu vaccination is recommended by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics and the World Health Organization for children aged 6 months and 5 years and elderly individuals above 50 years to prevent complications. The flu virus can spread quickly, with common symptoms including cough, fever, chills, sore throat, tiredness, muscle ache, and headache.

It spreads through respiratory droplets, which can be picked by children and adults. Schools and playgrounds are common locations for spreading the virus. Dr. Devdeep Mukherjee, Mission Hospital, said, “Parents should consult their doctor for medical advice and regarding annual 4-in-1 flu vaccination for protecting their children against flu along with maintaining hygiene and social distancing.”
