Mob Violence in Kokrajhar Leaves One Dead, Four Critical; 18 Held

On January 19, a tragic incident of mob violence occurred in Gaurinagar, Karigaon, Assam, resulting in the death of one individual and serious injuries to four others. The deceased, Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, was a resident of Bagaribari under Rupsi. The violence erupted around 7:30 PM following an altercation between two groups, which quickly escalated. During the conflict, individuals set fire to a Scorpio vehicle, heightening tension in the area.

The injured were identified as Mahesh Murmu and Sunil Murmu, both from Karigaon, along with Jugiraj Brahma from Anthaigaon. They were taken to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for treatment, where their conditions are reported to be critical and under close monitoring.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the violence may have stemmed from a road accident involving the Scorpio, which allegedly struck two people. However, police have stated that the exact circumstances and motivations for the clash are still unclear and under active investigation.

Law enforcement arrived at the scene promptly to contain the situation. In light of the unrest, security has been significantly enhanced in Gaurinagar and its surroundings. As of the report, 18 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects. The situation remains tense but is currently stable due to a strong police presence ensuring public safety.
