In a disturbing event in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, a couple was attacked and burned alive in their home by a group that suspected them of witchcraft. This tragic incident occurred in Number one Beloguri Munda village in the Howraghat area on a Tuesday night. The assailants first assaulted the victims, Gardi Birowa (43) and Mira Birowa (33), with sharp weapons while they were inside their house before setting it ablaze. Villagers accused the couple of practicing witchcraft and believed they were responsible for misfortune in the area. Following the attack, senior police and civil officials arrived at the scene to initiate an investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for this heinous crime. In response to the violence, security measures have been heightened in the region, which is reportedly plagued by longstanding superstitions that have led to similar violent incidents in the past.
