The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has strongly condemned the recent bombings of Kuki villages in Mongbung and Sejang in Manipur’s Jiribam district, accusing Meitei militants, allegedly backed by state forces, of orchestrating the attacks. According to KOHUR, the assaults involved military-grade weaponry and targeted civilian areas, resulting in widespread destruction and the displacement of Kuki residents. KOHUR described the bombings as a grave violation of human rights, escalating the already tense ethnic conflict in the region. The organisation called the attacks part of a broader campaign aimed at ethnically cleansing Kuki communities. KOHUR presented several key points in support of its allegations:
The villages, despite being free of militant activity, were subjected to indiscriminate artillery fire, which the group sees as a deliberate attempt to inflict severe damage. The organisation claims that state security forces are complicit, accusing them of supporting Meitei militants, as neighbouring Meitei villages were left unscathed. KOHUR argues that the attacks breach international human rights laws and criticized the lack of accountability from the Manipur government. The bombings are described as part of a wider pattern of ethnic violence, including arson and killings, aimed at erasing Kuki presence in the state.
KOHUR has called for an independent international investigation, urging the Government of India, the United Nations, and global human rights organizations to step in. They demand urgent measures to protect Kuki communities and accountability for what they label as “state-sponsored genocide.”“The Kuki people will not stand silent in the face of genocide,” said H. Benjamin Mate, Chairman of KOHUR, appealing to the international community to intervene and halt the violence.
