Meitei Man Shot Dead After Abduction in Churachandpur, State on Edge

A man from the Meitei community, Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh, was abducted and shot dead by suspected Kuki militants in Churachandpur district, marking an escalation of ethnic tensions in Manipur. Singh was taken from the Tuibong area at around 6:30 PM and later killed near Natjang village. Police suspect involvement of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), which is not part of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement signed by the government and several Kuki-Zo militant groups. Singh, who recently returned from Nepal and was married to Chingnu Haokip, had reportedly gained permission from Kuki authorities for his visit and was later abducted before being killed. His body was found later that evening, prompting investigations and an increased security presence in the area to prevent further violence. The ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has led to over 260 fatalities and significant displacement, deeply dividing the Meitei and Kuki communities.
