Meghalaya Set to Get ₹9,631 Crore as Tax Devolution in 2026–27 Union Budget

Meghalaya has been allocated ₹9,631 crore in tax devolution for the 2026–27 Union Budget, significantly enhancing its available funds for developmental priorities. This funding reflects the Centre’s ongoing fiscal backing, with amplified tax transfers and increased Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) for accelerated infrastructure development. From 2014 to 2024, Meghalaya received ₹69,339 crore in tax devolution and ₹40,452 crore in grants, with ₹6,523 crore provided as interest-free loans under SASCI since 2020–21, aimed at long-term asset creation.

The additional funding has resulted in fulfilling notable infrastructure projects. Over 1,156 km of National Highways have been completed, with another 170 km approved under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. Rural connectivity is enhanced with 88 roads and 55 bridges sanctioned at a cost of ₹1,056 crore under PMGSY-III. Rail connections have expanded since the state was linked to the national railway network, with electric train services commencing in March 2023, and budget allocations for Northeast railways have surged nearly fivefold, reaching ₹10,440 crore for 2025–26.

Air service enhancements include eight new routes under the RCS-UDAN and Krishi UDAN schemes. The education sector has improved with the establishment of an Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs campus and the Gati Shakti Research Chair at IIM Shillong. Furthermore, tourism and urban infrastructure projects, such as the Meghalayan Age Cave Experience, have expanded under PRASAD and Swadesh Darshan schemes.

Additionally, industrial development has been boosted through UNNATI-2024 and PM-DevINE initiatives funding essential infrastructure. The Union Budget’s allocations have also enhanced welfare coverage, with 8.98 lakh PM Jan Dhan accounts, 10.9 lakh beneficiaries of PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, and significant loans disbursed under PM Mudra Yojana. Furthermore, rural households are supported with tap water and LPG connections through Jal Jeevan Mission and PM Ujjwala Yojana, alongside over 21 lakh beneficiaries of the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana.
