The Meghalaya government is moving forward with ambitious plans to expand Shillong Airport in Umroi, aiming to boost regional connectivity by accommodating larger aircraft. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees the transport department, shared key details after a site visit and discussions with aviation officials.
A report from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) highlighted the potential for expansion, focusing on a 900-meter runway extension to the south. This plan would avoid nearby hills and mitigate environmental concerns. However, regulatory hurdles remain. Dhar emphasized the need for exemptions from central government guidelines to keep the project feasible. Without these exemptions, the estimated cost could skyrocket to Rs 8,000 crore, threatening the project’s viability.
The proposal involves acquiring 22 acres of land—16 acres for safety measures and 6 acres for an expanded aircraft parking area. The state cabinet is set to review and approve this acquisition. The overall expansion is projected to cost around Rs 500 crore, with the central government covering construction expenses, while the state government will manage land acquisition. Dhar noted that a fully operational airport could create 300-400 jobs in the region, benefiting the local economy.
