Meghalaya Government Allocates Land for Holiday Inn Resort in Tura

The Meghalaya government has officially transferred land for a significant hotel project valued at Rs 130 crore in Tura, as part of the proposed Holiday Inn Resort Project by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). The handover ceremony took place during an event organized by the Department of Tourism, attended by prominent officials, including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and other government ministers.

Chief Minister Sangma characterized the event as historic, noting the significance of Tura hosting a five-star hotel—a leap from a mere four-star option that he had passionately deliberated on before making a final decision. He emphasized the stark differences between the standards and investments required for four-star compared to five-star hotels, affirming his commitment to pursuing the latter as part of the state’s holistic development plan.

Sangma addressed questions regarding the necessity of high-end hospitality infrastructure, arguing for comprehensive development that includes not just tourism but also essential services such as roads, hospitals, and education. He tied this project to a broader economic strategy aimed at transforming Meghalaya into a ten-billion-dollar economy, referencing the launch of Mission 10 to achieve this goal.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the state’s economy had risen from below 4 billion dollars to nearly 7 billion dollars, with the hotel project serving as a crucial component of the required Rs 8,000 crore private investment to meet growth targets. He noted the economic benefits of a five-star hotel, including attracting tourism, conferences, and corporate events that ultimately strengthen the local economy.

Additionally, Sangma unveiled an innovative scheme for the National Games 2027, introducing a “Homestay-cum-Games Village” initiative that will provide beneficiaries with 70 percent subsidies to create homestays complying with gaming guidelines, allowing them continued ownership post-Games.
