Meghalaya Congress Calls for Independent Probe into Killing of ACHIK Member

The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has demanded an independent investigation into the alleged murder of ACHIK member Dilseng Sangma at Rajabala in West Garo Hills district.

authorization. State Congress Working President Deborah Marak criticised the state government and district administration for what she termed a failure to prevent the incident. She also sought clarity on whether the stone quarry where a group of ACHIK members was attacked on January 9 was operating with valid legal authorization.

“The incident is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions about whether the stone quarry involved was functioning legally or illegally. This is a crucial issue that requires immediate clarification,” Marak said, adding that the occurrence pointed to serious lapses on the part of the district administration.

She further stated that the state government and the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills must take responsibility for the incident. Calling for accountability, Marak urged the government to institute an independent inquiry to establish the facts and identify those responsible. “The truth behind the incident must be brought to light and the perpetrators must be punished,” she said.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining law and order, Marak noted that public safety should be the government’s top priority, especially with the Garo Hills District Autonomous Council elections approaching.

“Any failure in ensuring law and order will erode public confidence and further destabilize the region. The government must act decisively to ensure peace, security, and justice for all and to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents,” she added.
