Meghalaya CM launches Umpdem School project on Republic Day

On the occasion of the 76th Republic Day, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation for the Umpdem RCLP School in the Eastern West Khasi Hills district, marking a significant milestone in the state’s education sector. This event was especially momentous as it was the first time a Chief Minister had visited the village. CM Sangma expressed his joy at being with the people of Umpdem, describing the occasion as a privilege. During the ceremony, Sangma emphasized the importance of investing in education, calling it the most effective means of ensuring future prosperity. He said, “Investment in education will yield the highest return in the future, and we must continue to prioritize education for the youth of our state.” He also underlined that no program, no matter how small, and no village, no matter how remote, should be overlooked. “Every village is my village,” he declared, adding that it is his responsibility as Chief Minister to ensure that all villages, not just district headquarters, receive the development, services, and support they deserve.

CM Sangma also acknowledged the contribution of Mairang MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang, who donated Rs 40 lakhs through his scheme for the construction of the school building. In addition to the school foundation, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Mawhati Block Office in Ri Bhoi district, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the local community. He noted that this new facility would not only bring governance closer to the people but would also improve the efficiency of the Umsning Block, which previously required people to travel over 100 kilometers to access government services.

Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to upgrading all Block offices in the state, many of which, he said, date back to the time of undivided Assam and have never been renovated. These upgrades, he explained, are crucial for enhancing the administrative capacity at the grassroots level. The Chief Minister also spoke about the future economic potential of the region, highlighting the construction of the Umsning-Mawhati road connecting Jagi Road in Assam, which will enhance connectivity and spur economic growth in the area. He called on the people to collaborate with the government to foster development, especially in the border areas.
