The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved amendments to the Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsman Direct Appointment Policy. “These minor changes, decided six to seven months ago, aim to benefit sportspersons. Alongside this, the Cabinet has also approved the draft Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsmen Direct Appointment Service Rules,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated on Thursday. Under these rules, a special cadre will be created for medal-winning sportspersons in selected tournaments, such as the Olympics, National Games and South Asian Games.
“Only six recognized tournaments are included. The cadre will be individual-specific and position-based, and will discontinue upon the retirement of the sportsperson, ensuring no disruption to promotions or service of other departmental staff,” Sangma said. Additionally, the Cabinet clarified the process for the 2 percent reservation for sportspersons. “The sports department will now certify eligible sportspersons through an online application system, providing a certificate that allows them to apply under this reservation category. This formalizes a process that was previously unclear,” the Chief Minister said.
