Meghalaya BJP Seeks ED Investigation into Alleged Illegal Coal Trade

The BJP state unit in Meghalaya has called for an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation into alleged illegal coal trade activities in the region. Bernard Marak, the vice-president of Meghalaya BJP and chairman of the committee focused on illegal coal mining, disclosed that the committee has submitted its initial inquiry report to the Centre and is preparing a comprehensive follow-up report. Initial findings from Garo Hills indicate substantial corruption involving police, deputy commissioners, and some MLAs, who allegedly receive payments per truck to ignore illegal transportation of coal.

Marak pointed out the inconsistencies in truck movements and challenging documentation, suggesting significant revenue losses due to the rampant illegal activities. The ongoing collection of evidence from quarries aims to pinpoint the origins of these illegal practices. He denounced the state government’s denial of the situation despite widespread awareness of the illicit activities.

The BJP leader alleged a network of high-profile individuals benefiting from the illegal coal trade, stating that specific information is being collected about monetary exchanges facilitating the movement of coal and the specific routes involved. He emphasized that legal coal transportation could provide revenue for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), arguing that illegal operations are instead depriving the council of its rightful earnings.

Furthermore, Marak mentioned an FIR has been lodged regarding trucks operating without proper documentation. He insists that unless the state government takes action, an ED investigation will become necessary to address the unchecked illegal coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya.
