Medanta’s Dr. Ashok Rajgopal hits 40,000 knee replacements as India’s orthopaedic market expands

Medanta Gurugram, ranked India’s Best Private Hospital by Newsweek for six consecutive years, has celebrated a milestone achievement as Dr. Ashok Rajgopal, Group Chairman – Medanta Institute of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Orthopaedics, completed 40,000 knee replacement surgeries. The feat reinforces Medanta’s leadership in advanced orthopaedic care, backed by world-class infrastructure and expertise.

India is witnessing a sharp rise in joint health issues, with nearly 60 million people projected to suffer from knee osteoarthritis by 2025. Driven by ageing demographics, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles, the knee replacement market in India is expected to grow at a steady CAGR of 11% between 2025–2035. More than 2.5 lakh procedures are already being performed annually, compared to just one lakh five years ago.

The demand for advanced orthopaedic care is steadily rising as awareness about knee replacement options grows. Patients from Assam and the Northeast have traditionally traveled to metro cities for complex surgeries. With Medanta planning a new hospital in Guwahati, experts say the region’s healthcare ecosystem is set for a transformation, offering patients access to cutting-edge joint replacement care closer to home. Dr. Rajgopal said innovations like robotics, patient-specific implants, and structured rehabilitation are helping deliver faster recovery and superior outcomes.
