After being conferred with the Padma Shri award, a distinguished Manipuri classical dancer Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi expressed her happiness and said that it is a “matter of luck”. The government announced the Padma Awards on Saturday on the eve of the 76th Republic Day. Born and raised in Imphal West district, Suryamukhi started dancing at a very early age and she has been trained under notable gurus. Her talent has been recognised internationally due to her performances.
The Padma Awards, which were instituted in 1954, are one of the highest civilian honours of India and are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. The awards are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher order), and Padma Shri (distinguished service) .In a conversation with ANI, she said, “I am very happy after listening to this. It’s a matter of luck that I am receiving this award…”
