Authorities in Manipur’s Kamjong district have imposed a strict curfew in the villages of Gampal and its hamlet Haiyang following a disturbing arson attack that destroyed multiple homes early Wednesday morning. The incident has triggered concerns over public safety and a possible breakdown in law and order. The curfew order was issued by District Magistrate Rangnamei Rang Peter, effective from 2:00 PM on April 23, and will remain in place until further notice. The action follows a report from the Superintendent of Police, Kamjong, confirming that several homes were set ablaze by unidentified miscreants around 9:00 AM in the morning.
The sudden attack has left the villagers in shock and fear, with authorities scrambling to maintain calm in the region. While no casualties have been reported, the destruction of property has caused significant distress to the local population. Citing powers under Section 163(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the District Magistrate has restricted all movement within Gampal and Haiyang. Residents have been ordered to remain indoors, and all public gatherings or activities that may disrupt peace are temporarily banned. Only government officials and personnel engaged in essential services and law enforcement are exempted from the curfew. For any processions related to weddings, funerals, or community events, residents must seek written permission in advance from either the District Magistrate or the Superintendent of Police.
To ensure proper enforcement of the curfew, Hungyo Yurreikan, SDC of Sahamphung, has been appointed as the Executive Magistrate for the affected areas. He will be responsible for overseeing security arrangements and ensuring that peace is maintained on the ground.
