A significant quantity of arms and ammunition was voluntarily surrendered by civilians across multiple locations in Thoubal, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts on February 23. The surrender took place at designated police stations and Superintendent of Police (SP) offices, with authorities viewing it as a crucial step toward restoring normalcy in the region.
The surrendered weapons included sophisticated firearms such as sniper rifles, AK-56 rifles, submachine guns, pistols, and explosive devices like IEDs and hand grenades. In Thoubal district, arms recovered included an SMG carbine, two sniper rifles, a tear gas gun, and mortar shells, along with communication equipment such as Baofeng handheld radios. Similarly, in Imphal East, weapons like an AK-56 rifle, MAS Series Bolt Action Sniper Rifle, and .303 rifle were handed over, while in Imphal West, a 9mm Carbine A1 was surrendered.
In addition to the voluntary surrender, security forces intensified search operations in vulnerable areas, leading to further recoveries of arms and explosives. A major operation in Langza, Churachandpur district, resulted in the seizure of a .303 rifle, single-barrel guns, an 81mm mortar, country-made IEDs, and modified ammunition. These operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb the circulation of illegal arms and enhance security in the hill and valley districts.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and have urged the public to cooperate with security forces in ensuring peace and stability. The voluntary surrender of arms is seen as a positive step toward reducing violence and fostering a safer environment in Manipur.
