In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, the state administration on Friday transferred 11 officials, including six senior police officers, according to an official statement. The move comes just days after the northeastern state was placed under President’s Rule on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. With the Manipur Assembly under suspended animation, the administration has initiated key changes in the police and civil services to streamline governance in the politically volatile state. As per the official order, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tamenglong district, Babitarani Swain, has been reassigned as the SP of Chandel district, while the current SP of Chandel has been posted to Tamenglong in an exchange of responsibilities.
Further, Inspector General of Police (IGP) (Internal Security/Narcotics and Affairs of Border), Kabib K, has been appointed as IGP Zone-III, while Deputy Inspector General of Police (NAB) Ningshen Worngam has been promoted and transferred as IGP (Internal Security/NAB). In the civil administration, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Secretary to Chief Minister, Manipuri/Social Welfare) and Special Secretary (Cabinet) N Geoffrey has been reassigned as Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Social Welfare). The reshuffle is seen as an attempt to maintain administrative efficiency and law enforcement stability amid the ongoing unrest in the state. Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions and political uncertainty, prompting the Centre to take direct control of governance.
The imposition of President’s Rule means that legislative powers now rest with the Governor, acting under the guidance of the Union Government. With the state assembly tenure extending until 2027, its suspension has left the political future of Manipur uncertain.
