In a major crackdown on insurgent-linked extortion activities, Manipur Police arrested five militants associated with three different insurgent groups on March 25. The arrested individuals were allegedly involved in extorting businesses, government officials, and the transport sector in various parts of the state.
During an operation in Imphal and Bishnupur, police arrested two cadres of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Koireng faction) for extorting truck operators. The suspects, identified as Thongam Ronaldo Singh (26) and Khuraijam Michael Singh (28) from Imphal East, were found in possession of three Tata truck keys, two truck challans, a four-wheeler smart card, and two mobile phones.
In a separate raid near Standard College in Kongba, security forces detained Tayenjam Sanatomba Singh (43), an active member of SOREPA, who was accused of issuing monetary threats to government officials. Authorities recovered two mobile phones and Rs 1,010 from his possession.
Meanwhile, in Bishnupur District, police nabbed two active members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP-PWG)—Wairakpam Jagatchandra Singh (31), alias Theko, and Pebam Romen Singh (28), alias Naopung—for allegedly extorting money from a shop, a doctor, a fuel station, and a private school in Imphal West and Nambol. Two mobile phones were seized from them.
With security forces intensifying their crackdown on insurgent-linked criminal activities, authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order in Manipur.
