Manipur Government relaunches inter-district transport service after 19 months

The Manipur government has announced plans to restart inter-district public transport services from Wednesday, marking the second attempt in 19 months to connect Imphal with hill districts under heightened security. The decision comes amidst a temporary lull in ethnic violence that has plagued the state since May 2023.

Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi issued an official order stating that public vehicles will operate between Imphal and Senapati via Kangpokpi, and between Imphal and Churachandpur via Bishnupur, with security forces ensuring safe passage. The initiative aims to ease transportation challenges faced by residents due to prolonged unrest. “The movement will be restricted to fixed hours, and individuals interested in utilizing the services must contact their respective Deputy Commissioners’ offices,” the order specified. Authorities have warned that any attempts to disrupt the service will result in strict legal action.

This effort follows a failed attempt last December when state-run buses faced roadblocks and low public response. The ongoing ethnic tensions between Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities have resulted in over 258 deaths and thousands being displaced, severely disrupting public services. The government has urged public cooperation, emphasizing the importance of restoring essential connectivity to alleviate hardships across the state.
