Manipur Congress Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has criticized the central government for not allowing state MLAs to elect a new leader following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. N Biren Singh stepped down on Sunday, and his resignation was accepted by Governor Anusuiya Uikey. Singh was asked to remain in office until alternative arrangements were made, but no efforts have been initiated to form a new government, sparking concerns of a potential constitutional crisis.
“This situation should not have escalated to a constitutional crisis. It reflects negligence by the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They should have allowed the legislators to elect a new leader immediately after the resignation. It would have taken just an hour or two,” said Ibobi Singh.Singh also criticized the abrupt cancellation of the Manipur Assembly’s budget session, which was scheduled to begin on Monday. The session was declared “null and void” shortly after Singh’s resignation, leaving the state in further political disarray.
Political experts have raised concerns about the growing uncertainty in BJP-ruled Manipur, with no clear indication of leadership transition or claims to form the next government.
