Manipal Hospitals introduces AI-powered wireless pacemaker in Eastern India

Manipal Hospitals has successfully implemented India’s first AI-driven wireless injectable pacemaker in Eastern India, marking a significant advancement in cardiac care. The Aveir Leadless pacemaker, developed by Abbott and already in use in the US and Europe, was first implanted in a 65-year-old patient at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria.

The innovative device weighs just 2.4 grams and offers several advantages over traditional pacemakers, including a longer lifespan of 20-25 years compared to the typical 7-8 years. Its non-magnetic design allows patients to safely undergo MRI scans and pass through airport security. The pacemaker can be upgraded from single to dual-chamber configuration and features Bluetooth connectivity for remote monitoring.

Dr. P.K. Hazra, an Interventional Cardiologist at Manipal Hospital, highlighted that the device eliminates the need for invasive surgery and external wires, while enabling worldwide specialist monitoring. The technology is particularly beneficial for patients with compromised immunity, those on dialysis, or individuals using blood thinners. India becomes the third country globally to adopt this USFDA and European Medical Authority-approved device. The implementation of this technology could also benefit neighboring countries like Bhutan, where cardiovascular diseases are a significant health challenge.
