Manipal Hospital drives cancer awareness in Bhagalpur, emphasizes on early detection and screening

Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, one of the leading units of the Manipal Hospitals Group, organized a special cancer awareness session in Bhagalpur in line with its commitment to cancer awareness and early detection. In 2025, an estimated 10 million people globally lost their lives to cancer, with both men and women affected across all age groups. In India alone, over 1.5 million new cancer cases are diagnosed annually, and more than 8 lakh deaths are attributed to the disease. Recognizing the urgent need to strengthen awareness, promote routine screening, and encourage timely medical intervention, the interactive programme was led by senior oncologists Dr. Pooja Agarwal, Consultant – Surgical Oncology (Breast Surgery), and Dr. Neha Agarwal, Consultant – Gynaecologic Oncology & Robotic Surgery, Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, who shared valuable insights on early warning signs, screening guidelines, and advancements in cancer care. According to recent studies, the incidence and mortality due to cancer have been steadily increasing, with lung, breast, colorectal, cervical, and oral cancers being some of the leading types. It is also estimated that approximately 40% of cancers can be prevented by modifying lifestyle and screening, while early diagnosis can greatly improve survival chances. For instance, the survival rate for early-stage breast cancer is over 90% within 5 years, thereby underscoring the potential for saving lives through early diagnosis.

The session focused on at spreading awareness among the community regarding the early identification of symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention. The doctors also made it clear that with the latest advancements in technology and treatment strategies, many cancers can be easily cured if diagnosed early, thereby allowing patients to lead healthy lives. Speaking at the event, Dr. Pooja Agarwal further added, “We are seeing a growing incidence of cancer across age groups, but the encouraging aspect is the remarkable progress in medical science that now enables earlier detection and more effective treatment. Advances in diagnostics, precision imaging, minimally invasive procedures, and personalized therapies have significantly improved patient outcomes, making timely screening and awareness more important than ever. At Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass, we adopt a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together expert specialists, advanced technology, and individualized treatment strategies to deliver the highest standards of care while supporting patients with compassion at every step of their journey.”

Dr. Neha Agarwal said, “Early diagnosis remains the most powerful tool in the fight against cancer. When detected at an initial stage, most cancers can be treated effectively, significantly improving survival rates and quality of life. Through sustained awareness initiatives and accessible screening programmes, our goal is to ensure that timely diagnosis is within reach for every woman, regardless of her background. The right intervention at the right time can transform uncertainty and fear into confidence and recovery.”
