Livelihood Boost for Women’s Groups Living Around Laokhowa-Burhachapori Sanctuary

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the livelihoods of women living near wildlife protection areas, the biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak has partnered with multiple organizations, including the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve Authority, Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary Authority, and the Nagaon Wildlife Division, with support from the International Rhino Foundation (IRF). This collaboration has led to the provision of weaving sets, sewing machines, and other essential equipment to two women’s groups located at the fringes of the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam.

On February 17, a formal handover ceremony took place at the Gorajan Range of the sanctuary, where Rajib Hazarika, the Divisional Forest Officer of the Nagaon Wildlife Division, and Arif Hussain, Senior Manager of the Rhino Research and Conservation Division of Aaranyak, presented the equipment. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Range Officers Pankaj Bora and Mukut Rabha, Dilwar Hussain, President of the LBCS, and conservationist Swapan Nath from Kaziranga, among other officials.

Aaranyak’s initiatives focus on enhancing livelihood opportunities for women in the vicinity of the sanctuary through various skill development programs. The beneficiaries had previously received training in water hyacinth crafts and have started generating income from eco-friendly products. The newly provided equipment is anticipated to boost their productivity, diversify their product offerings, and strengthen their income-generating capacity. The women beneficiaries expressed their sincere gratitude to both the Park Authority and Aaranyak for their ongoing support and guidance.

This initiative exemplifies a comprehensive strategy that integrates conservation objectives with sustainable community development in the Laokhowa landscape, thereby serving both ecological and socio-economic interests.
