JTC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Intimidation of Naga Villagers by KNF in Manipur

The Joint Tribes Council (JTC) of Manipur has raised alarm over threats and intimidation against indigenous Naga residents in Ireng Naga village, allegedly by members of the Kuki National Front (KNF). The JTC’s statement emphasizes that no Suspension of Operations (SoO) camps, unauthorized road constructions, or illegal poppy cultivation will be tolerated on Naga ancestral land. They claim KNF leader Tiger Kipgen issued life-threatening warnings on January 12, indicating that the Naga population would face violence, including potential fires set to entire villages.

The situation reportedly escalated with approximately 30 armed KNF members seen advancing towards Ireng village to intimidate civilians. An FIR against Kipgen and the KNF cadres was filed on January 14, and the Liangmai Naga Council has petitioned various authorities, including the Union Home Minister and the state security forces. However, the JTC alleges that no substantial actions have been taken against the threats, prompting a call for urgent government intervention to ensure civilian safety.

The council is committed to peace and the protection of indigenous lands but warns that continued inaction may lead to serious repercussions for which they claim they cannot be held accountable.
