Journalists Protest Attack on Editor, Demand Safety and Accountability

On Friday, journalists from various media organizations gathered for a sit-in protest at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal West, standing against the violent attack on Khoirom Loyalakpa, editor of Naharolgi Thoudang daily, by armed assailants. This demonstration was organized by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild of Manipur (EGM). AMWJU President Asem Bhakta condemned the life-threatening attack on Loyalakpa, demanding accountability from the individuals or groups responsible for this incident. Vice-president Sonia Sorensangbam characterized the attack as an infringement on press freedom, emphasizing that such disturbing events should not be tolerated in the future. Protesters displayed placards calling for an end to the intimidation of media personnel. The incident occurred on Wednesday night when Khoirom Loyalakpa was ambushed by unidentified gunmen while driving near Hatta cemetery in Imphal East district, resulting in the assailants firing two shots into the rear of his vehicle and subsequently assaulting him, which left him severely injured.
