As they put the finishing touches on their big Hall H presentation for next week’s Comic Con, Marvel Studios has already made plans to bring back their all-time-grossing directing duo in a big way. Sources tell Deadline, Joe and Anthony Russo are being brought to Marvel Studios on various fronts, with one of their first big priorities being the upcoming Avengers sequel at the studio.
Talks are still in the early stages for the pair to direct those films, but the plan would be for them to be involved in both films. Marvel had no comment.
The Next Avengers is a big part of setting up the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the studio needed a high-profile director (or directors in this case) to guide the ship given the scope of the project. Deadline first reported in May that Shawn Levy was at the top of their list, but sources say Levy is focusing on his other upcoming projects, including a new Star Wars picture at Lucasfilm.
Rosso returning to Marvel makes a lot of sense after the director duo delivered four of the biggest movies in Marvel history, including the biggest box-office hit of all time in Avengers: Endgame. He has since ventured to deliver more tentpole hits like last summer’s The Gray Man and the upcoming Netflix picture Electric State, which reunites him with Avengers star Chris Pratt.
We will update as more news emerges. The Russos coming to direct the Avengers sequel was first reported by Jeff Snyder on the Hot Mic Podcast.
