The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has mandated the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) of Wangoi Zone, Imphal West, to investigate a complaint regarding the wrongful confinement of two Class II/B students at Catholic School Canchipur on February 6, 2026. The inquiry, requested by parents, will assess student enrolment, teacher qualifications, and potential violations of laws related to corporal punishment and mental harassment. MCPCR Chairperson Keisam Pradipkumar has set a ten-day deadline for an Action Taken Report, which should include documentary evidence. The investigation will also examine classroom conditions, the school’s Child Protection Policy, and grievance mechanisms. The MCPCR aims to establish responsibility and recommends measures to prevent future incidents. Preliminary decisions indicate possible violations of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, and an Assistant Teacher has been suspended for three months pending the outcome, although further accountability for additional teachers is necessary.
