Indian Railways delivers first freight to Meghalaya

In a significant boost to Meghalaya’s railway connectivity, Indian Railways has successfully delivered its first freight shipment at Mendipathar railway station in North Garo Hills. The milestone is expected to enhance logistics and strengthen the transportation network in the region. The shipment, consisting of 21 wagons of foodgrains for the Food Corporation of India (FCI), arrived at Mendipathar station on February 4 at 9:20 AM and was placed for unloading at 9:40 AM. Officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed that this marks the first-ever unloading of a goods train in the hill state, further integrating Meghalaya into the country’s freight movement system.

“Mendipathar railway station is set to emerge as a crucial hub for freight operations in Meghalaya. This development will not only support economic activities but also strengthen the railway network across the Northeast,” an NFR spokesperson told PTI. Mendipathar railway station, operational since 2014, remains the lone railway station in Meghalaya. The long-standing plan to extend railway lines to Byrnihat, near the Assam-Meghalaya border, and further to Shillong has faced resistance from local organizations, including the Khasi Students’ Union, due to concerns over a potential influx of outsiders.

Despite these challenges, the successful delivery of freight at Mendipathar is seen as a step toward improving Meghalaya’s trade and transportation infrastructure. Officials anticipate that increased freight movement through the station will benefit businesses and consumers alike, reducing costs and ensuring better supply chain management in the state. Indian Railways continues to explore ways to expand its network in the Northeast while addressing local concerns through dialogue and sustainable development initiatives.
