A move that will give Indian airlines a boost as they extend their international operations is the country’s retention of Category 1 designation under the aviation safety assessment programme of the United States Federal Aviation Administration. The most recent development also comes after a few months in which India’s safety score dramatically improved in the audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). A country’s oversight of its air carriers that fly into the US, or want to do so, or that codeshare with a US air carrier is evaluated by the FAA under its International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) programme to assess if it complies with ICAO safety criteria.
