The 1st Manipur Digital Media Conclave, titled “Beyond Silence,” was held at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal, organized by Manipur Update. During the event, the Digital Journalism Awards 2026 were presented. The Chief Guest, Ahanthem Subash Singh, Director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Manipur, highlighted the transformative power of digital journalism, asserting it has revolutionized global news dissemination. However, he expressed concern over the challenges of producing fast, fact-based, and responsible reporting in the digital realm, where the influence of digital media on public perception is pronounced.
Singh emphasized that while some self-proclaimed digital journalists may prioritize content creation for monetization, it is essential for them to focus on genuine reporting rather than chasing likes or views. He stressed the importance of independent journalism in combatting the prevalence of paid news and preserving the credibility of journalism, particularly in an era where unchecked information can lead to misinformation that affects individual lives and mental well-being. Singh also recounted his own experiences with unreported positive news and suggested the establishment of a Journalism Award for highlighting beneficial government schemes to enhance public awareness.
Sobhapati Samom, Senior Journalist and Founding Editor of Manipur Update, reflected on the evolution of media, recalling initial apprehensions regarding the advent of television and the internet potentially rendering traditional forms obsolete. He affirmed that we are now in a digital age that requires a commitment to digital responsibility, as showcased by the DIPR’s Tableau on “Digital Responsibility for Social Stability and Harmony.”
Ngangom Uttam Singh, Joint Secretary of Tribal Affairs & Hills, Government of Manipur, remarked on the substantial role of social media in information dissemination and cautioned against the perils of irresponsible journalism. He noted the potential positive impact of journalism but recognized that misinformation can lead to significant repercussions for individuals and society at large.
Irengbam Arun, Senior Editor and Jury Member, mentioned the high caliber of entries received for the Digital Journalism Awards, suggesting that with proper mentorship, digital journalists can elevate their craftsmanship and set higher standards within the industry.
The conclave also included technical discussions on topics such as the “Paradigm Shift from Traditional Media to New Media” led by Pradip Phanjoubam, and “Role of Digital Media in Conflict and Peace Building” presented by Dhiren A. Sadokpam. Among the awards, Vangamla Salle was honored as the Digital Journalist of the Year.
