Illegal Migration: 1.7 Lakh Detected in Assam Since 1985, Government Informs House

More than 170,000 illegal foreigners have been detected in Assam, with approximately 31,000 being pushed back since the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985, as reported by Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora in the State Assembly. In the last year alone, 1,421 individuals were returned under directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, while 52 declared foreigners were expelled under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950. Bora noted that according to the Assam Accord provisions, 137,152 immigrants who entered after March 25, 1971, and an additional 33,485 who arrived between 1966 and 1971 have been recognized as declared foreigners. From 1985 to March 2013, a total of 29,663 illegal foreigners were sent back through the ‘Push Back’ process, whereas between 2013 and January 2026, 468 deportations occurred, including 458 involving convicted foreigners.
