Hyatt Regency Spa & Casino to Rise in Central Gangtok as Sikkim Lays Foundation Stone

In a significant development for Sikkim’s hospitality sector, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) laid the foundation stone for the Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a 150-room five-star hotel, during a ceremony at Chintan Bhawan. This project aims to position Gangtok as a high-value tourism hub catering to luxury travelers, destination weddings, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions). Tamang emphasized tourism’s importance to the state’s economy, noting that tourist numbers frequently surpass the state’s population, and expressed confidence that the hotel would embody Sikkim’s cultural identity through local art, cuisine, and talent.

Located in the Mintokgang area within the Suryavilas mixed-use development, approximately 2 km from MG Marg, the hotel is strategically close to key landmarks like the Enchey Monastery and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. With over 1.7 million tourists arriving in Gangtok in 2025, including more than 71,000 foreign visitors, the addition of 150 luxury rooms is expected to bridge the demand-supply gap in the premium hospitality segment and attract high-spending guests.

Gyalshing Hotels Private Limited, a subsidiary of SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, will develop the hotel, designed by Singapore-based SCSY Studio to meet global standards. The 3.27-acre property will include an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a Regency Club, a temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool, a spa, a gym, and family activity zones. It is set to offer around 13,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, enhancing Gangtok’s position for MICE tourism in the Eastern Himalayas. Additional amenities include a licensed casino facility, which is expected to further bolster the region’s appeal in regulated entertainment.

The hotel is anticipated to host large-scale events, weddings, conventions, and cultural showcases, aligning with national tourism initiatives like Swadesh Darshan 2.0. Furthermore, the initiative aims to generate significant employment opportunities, bolster local supply chains, and stimulate sectors such as transport, handicrafts, and cultural tourism. The Sikkim government seeks to attract responsible private investment while promoting Gangtok as a sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking tourism destination.
