Historic First: India Skills Competition Comes to Northeast from Jan 19

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is hosting the Northeast Regional Competition of IndiaSkills 2025-26 at Gauhati University, commencing on Monday. This four-day event, inaugurated by Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, signifies a pivotal development in India’s national skilling ecosystem, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing skill development, fostering regional inclusion, and promoting competitive excellence in emerging areas of the country. This marks the inaugural occurrence of a dedicated IndiaSkills Regional Competition exclusively for the Northeastern states, with participation from all eight states in the region. Hena Usman, joint secretary of the Ministry, noted that the competition aims to unite skilled youth from these states, allowing them to showcase their talents across 26 skill categories on a national platform.

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) plays a crucial role as the knowledge partner and implementing agency for the IndiaSkills Competition 2025-26. This regional event is a significant stride toward enhancing India’s skilling architecture in emerging regions. The IndiaSkills framework is the premier national skill competition in the country, aimed at identifying, nurturing, and benchmarking India’s finest vocational talent against international standards. It also aims to establish a clear progression pathway for skilled youth from grassroots levels to national and international competitions, such as the WorldSkills Competition. The regional competition has been designed to mitigate geographic and logistical hindrances to participation, bolster skill ecosystems in the Northeastern Region, and pinpoint region-specific strengths and promising candidates that align with industry demands and national objectives.
