High Court demands immediate action on road safety in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to enhance road safety measures following a review of progress on its December 2024 directives. The court emphasized the need for immediate action to reduce accidents and improve travel safety.

The division bench, comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Romilton Pahsyntiew after observing satisfactory compliance with earlier orders. However, it issued three new mandates to ensure safer roads, particularly in East Khasi Hills:

  • All speed breakers must be clearly visible from a distance to aid driver awareness.
  • Installation of warning signs before speed breakers, where feasible, is mandatory.
  • Proper installation and maintenance of speed detection equipment are required at critical locations.
The court noted that these measures would significantly enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. Advocates N Syngkon, ZE Nongkynrih, R Colney, and ER Chyne represented the parties during the proceedings.
