Greetings for Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu from President Droupadi Murmu

On the eve of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu, which are observed on January 13 and 14, respectively, Indian President Droupadi Murmu has hailed her fellow countrymen. “I extend heartfelt greetings to all Indians living in the country and abroad on the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, and Magh Bihu festivals,” the President wrote in her letter. “These festivals are symbols of our rich cultural heritage and bring with them enthusiasm and joy,” she said, underscoring the significance of these celebrations.

“Through these festivals which are also associated with crops, we express our gratitude to hard working farmers, who work tirelessly to feed the nation,” the president added, acknowledging the sacrifices of farmers. “May these festivals bring happiness and prosperity in everyone’s life and we work together with greater vigor to make India a developed country,” she said as she concluded, expressing her hope for advancement and prosperity.

With markets and fields bustling with activity—marketing and creating mejis and bhela ghars, respectively—Uruka and Magh Bihu spirits have, in the meantime, triumphed over Assam’s winter chill. As a post-harvest celebration, Bihu is mostly connected to the state’s traditional and ethnic cuisine. Pithas of various recipes, such as til pitha, ghila pitha, ladoo variants, chunga pithas, curds, beaten rice, milk, jaggery, etc., are among the delicacies.
