Meghalaya Commissioner and Secretary of the District Council Affairs Department, CVD Diengdoh on Wednesday informed that the State Government was closely monitoring the developments and continuously assessing the law-and-order situation in West Garo Hills even as nomination process for the council elections is continuing in other districts of Garo Hills. Diengdoh said that Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in Garo Hills in view of the prevailing situation ahead of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Elections, scheduled on April 10, 2026.

“In addition, one column of the Army has also carried out a flag march in the region to maintain law and order and instill confidence among the public,” he said. Garo Hills region remains on the boil following the reported deaths of two civilians in violent clashes that began on Monday and continued till Tuesday.
Diengdoh said there have been reports of two casualties following incidents of violence in the poll-bound areas.

However, he informed that despite the situation, the nomination process for the council elections is continuing in other districts of Garo Hills. “The government is analyzing the situation carefully,” he said, adding that as of now no decision has been taken on postponing the elections. The official also assured that necessary measures are being taken to ensure peace and security in the region while the election process continues.
