Governor Recalls Glorious Journey of Assamese Cinema at State Film Awards Ceremony

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the 9th Assam State Film Awards in Guwahati, celebrating the accomplishments of award winners and recognizing the event as a testament to Assam’s artistic and cultural vibrancy. He praised Assam’s rich traditions, languages, and folk arts, noting that cinema has expanded these cultural expressions to broader audiences. Acharya commemorated the pioneer of Assamese cinema, Rupkonwor Jyotiprasad Agarwala, highlighting his film Joymati for its foundational role in the industry, and recalled the contributions of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, whose music promoted messages of humanity and helped elevate Assamese culture globally. He also acknowledged Zubeen Garg’s influence on modern Assamese music and cinema, particularly in engaging youth with their heritage. The Governor recognized the Central Government’s initiatives like Digital India and Make in India, which have opened new opportunities for regional cinema, including Assamese films. He asserted that cinema serves as a societal mirror, fostering awareness and advocacy for key issues such as social justice and environmental protection. Despite resource limitations, Acharya noted the Assamese film industry’s notable successes on national and international stages, expressing commitment to enhancing film infrastructure and cultivating new talent, with aspirations to position Assam as a leading film hub in the Northeast.
