Global recognition for Manipur as Boong bags BAFTA Best Children’s and Family Film award

Manipuri comedy-drama “Boong,” produced by Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment, achieved notable recognition at the BAFTA Awards, winning the Best Children’s and Family Film category in London. The film’s director, Lakshmipriya Devi, expressed her emotions during the award acceptance, which she received from Paddington Bear, the iconic character from “Paddington The Musical.” On stage alongside producers Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, as well as assistant director Rahul Sharda, Devi reflected on the moment as akin to reaching an unanticipated mountain summit.

During her speech, she emphasized a heartfelt message for peace, specifically addressing the ongoing issues in Manipur, and highlighted the plight of internally displaced children, including those who acted in “Boong.” She articulated a desire for these children to reclaim their happiness, innocence, and aspirations, conveying a universal call for forgiveness as a human superpower.

In contrast, the action thriller “One Battle After Another” dominated the 79th BAFTAs, winning six awards, including the prestigious Best Film, with Paul Thomas Anderson named Best Director. The star-studded ceremony, held at the Royal Festival Hall beside the Thames, showcased Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt as a presenter for the award for Best Film not in the English Language, which went to the Nordic drama “Sentimental Value.” This year’s BAFTA event highlighted a blend of artistic achievements in both children’s cinema and international storytelling.
