Ghulam Nabi Azad’s account in his book “Azaad,” Rahul Gandhi’s direct response when informed that Himanta Biswa Sarma, once the Congress’ top official in Assam, had the backing of the majority of MLAs and would revolt and leave the party, was to “let him go.” Azad, a previous supporter of the Congress who defected from the group in August 2022 and founded his own regional party, similarly criticises Sonia Gandhi for failing to take the reins of the party “despite knowing the devastating implications that lay ahead.” Sarma was a crucial Congress strategist who later joined the BJP and is currently the chief minister of Assam. As he left the party in September 2015 due to disagreements with the Assam-based Congress leadership, ten MLAs followed him.
