Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Weising, was able to feel the simplicity of UPI (Unified Payment Interface) payments at firsthand and was very “impressed” by the experience. On Sunday, the German Embassy in India took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise India’s digital infrastructure, hailing it as one of the country’s success stories.
The German Embassy in India shared videos and photos of Mr Wissing buying groceries and using UPI for payment. The accompanying caption read, “One of India’s success story is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments first hand and is very fascinated!”
Mr. Wissing was in Bengaluru on August 19 to attend the G20 Digital Ministers’ meeting.
According to a report by PwC India, UPI has become India’s leading digital payments platform with a 59% year-on-year growth in transactions and an estimated milestone of 1 billion daily transactions by 2026-27.
