Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has sharply criticized the Central Water Commission (CWC), accusing it of neglecting Assam amidst a severe flood crisis that has gripped the state. In a recent statement posted on the microblogging site X, Gogoi emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive, long-term solution and substantial financial investment to address the recurring problem of floods and erosion in Assam.
Representing the Jorhat constituency, Gogoi pointedly highlighted the lack of significant progress in flood management efforts over the past eight years, underlining what he termed as the ‘double-engine’ failure of the BJP government at both state and central levels. He specifically called out the CWC for its apparent oversight of Assam’s plight, urging the Minister of Jal Shakti to visit the state and witness the dire situation firsthand.
The MP’s concerns come amid alarming statistics, with Gogoi reporting on July 8 that the ongoing floods have tragically claimed 78 lives across Assam. Through a series of tweets, he detailed the extensive devastation caused by relentless rains, which have inundated homes and displaced numerous families. His visits to affected areas around Jorhat unveiled a grim reality, with widespread damage to infrastructure and severe disruptions to livelihoods.
Highlighting the broader repercussions, Gogoi underscored the substantial agricultural and livestock losses, sounding a warning about potential food security crises in the affected regions. He has urgently called upon authorities to expedite relief efforts and provide immediate support to the distressed communities.
