Gauhati High Court Bar Association to boycott foundation stone laying ceremony of new high court complex

The Gauhati High Court Bar Association (GHCBA) has asked its members to abstain from participating in the foundation stone laying ceremony of new high court complex at Rangmahal in North Guwahati on January11. The members of the bar association will also observe hunger strike from 10 am to 4 pm on January 8, 9 and 11 in front of the old high court building to protest against the move to shift the high court to North Guwahati. A notice issued by GHCBA president Kamal Nayan Choudhury and general secretary Girin Pegu said the decision to boycott the foundation stone laying ceremony was taken at an emergent extraordinary general meeting of the bar association held on Tuesday. The GHCBA is opposing the move to shift the high court to North Guwahati saying that the relocation of the high court from its historic site will affect both the advocates and litigants as they will have to travel long distances for hearings and bear additional financial burden.
