Garo Hills Autonomous District Council polls postponed due to violence

The Meghalaya government today decided to indefinitely postpone the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which was slated to be held on April 10. The decision was taken after violence erupted following a controversial notification barring non-tribal people from contesting the GHADC elections. Curfew was imposed and internet service was suspended on Tuesday after two people died in the violence. “Keeping the prevailing situation and sentiments of the people in mind, the Meghalaya government has decided to postpone the GHADC elections,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced. “We will sit and we will decide on how to further take this process ahead, and till then the decision has been made to postpone the elections,” he said.
