Former GHADC Leader Arrested Over Alleged Role in Garo Hills Communal Tensions

Former Garo Hills Autonomous District Council member Sofiur Rehman was arrested at his residence in Bhaitbari under Rajabala Police Station for allegedly inciting communal disharmony during recent violence in Garo Hills that resulted in two fatalities. According to West Garo Hills SP Abraham T Sangma, the arrest was based on Rehman’s social media posts, which were widely circulated and prompted violence in the region from March 9-11. The unrest began following the GHADC’s notification prohibiting non-tribals from participating in council elections, which sparked protests. Violent clashes ensued between protesters and security forces, leading to vandalism and arson of government and private properties, as well as the burning of vehicles.
