Forest fire near Japfu college threatens rare Flora on Mt. Shüho

A forest fire erupted on February 13 near Japfu Christian College in Kohima, Nagaland, raising alarms about its potential impact on Mt. Shüho’s rare flora. The mountain, known for its unique red rhododendrons and orchids, is facing a significant threat as the fire spreads rapidly. The blaze, which began around 11:30 am, is suspected to have originated from jungle clearing activities related to jhum cultivation, although the exact cause remains unclear, according to officials.

Kohima Fire and Emergency Services officer-in-charge Inspector Kelesa confirmed that fire tenders were dispatched immediately after a report was received around noon. However, the mountainous terrain near the site—located 13 km from Kohima in the southern Angami region—posed significant challenges to fire containment efforts. “We have managed to control the fire in areas accessible to our vehicles,” Kelesa stated, while stressing the need for continued monitoring.

Kigwema village council chairman Balie Kere expressed deep concern over the fire’s potential to spread to inhabited areas or nearby villages. “It could cause significant environmental damage if not controlled immediately,” Kere warned.
