Five Militant Groups Seek Public Apology from Sangai Festival Participants by December 10

Rebel groups in Manipur have criticized the individuals and organizations involved in the recently held Sangai Festival, labeling the event as a “betrayal” of the thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who remain in relief camps due to ongoing ethnic clashes. This coalition of five insurgent groups, including the Kangleipak Communist Party and the United National Liberation Front, demands a public apology by December 10, 2025, from all participants of the festival. The Sangai Festival, which is a key cultural event in Manipur, took place from November 21 to 30, amidst protests by IDPs advocating for their safe return home after violent confrontations between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023, which resulted in over 260 deaths and significant displacement.

In their joint statement, the rebel groups assert that the ongoing hardships faced by displaced families have been neglected by the state administration, currently under President’s Rule, which they accuse of failing to address the conflict or assist those affected. Furthermore, they have enacted a one-year ban on four major drama troupes from Manipur that participated in the festival, claiming that their actions contradict “the wishes of the people.” The ultimatum from the militant outfits introduces an additional layer of tension in a state already struggling with a prolonged crisis and the unresolved circumstances of numerous displaced individuals.
