The Social Welfare Department of Meghalaya celebrated International Women’s Day at Lok Bhavan in Shillong, coinciding with the 11th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme. The event, themed “Give to Gain,” was organized by the State Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women alongside various departments and honored multiple women from diverse fields for their accomplishments. Governor C. H. Vijayashankar emphasized the need for women’s empowerment and equal opportunities for societal strength. He reflected on the achievements of the BBBP initiative, which promotes the welfare of the girl child, and stressed the importance of constitutional equality under Article 15 of the Indian Constitution. The Governor noted the low representation of women in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and expressed hope for the proposed 33% reservation for women, aimed at enhancing their political participation. He also highlighted concerns about teenage pregnancy as a significant issue affecting girls’ health and future, calling for increased awareness, education access, and community support. The Social Welfare Department recognized women achievers from sports, entrepreneurship, and agriculture for their contributions during the event.
