Eighth Pay Commission Set Up by Assam Govt to Review Salaries

The Assam government has established the Eighth Assam Pay Commission to conduct a thorough review of the emoluments and service conditions of state government employees. This Commission is led by retired IAS officer Subhash Chandra Das and includes senior officials from the Personnel, Administrative Reforms, Training, Pension and Public Grievances, and Finance Departments, among others.

The eight-member body is tasked with a reformative agenda that transcends traditional pay revision. As stated in an official order from the state finance department, the Commission is expected to adopt a comprehensive approach that integrates pay revision with essential structural reforms, fiscal sustainability, digital advancements, manpower optimization, and outcome-based governance.

Moreover, the Commission’s terms of reference specify that it will explore the governing principles of emoluments and service conditions, while expressly excluding officers in All-India Services, those on UGC/AICTE or technical pay scales in recognized higher education and technical institutions, as well as judicial service officers who are subject to distinct national guidelines.
