ED Cracks Down in Assam, Attaches Properties Valued at ₹8.94 Crore

The Guwahati Zonal Office of Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized properties valued at Rs 8.90 crore and movable assets worth Rs 3.71 lakh as part of an investigation into a disproportionate assets case involving Akhtar Hussain, a former Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, and his wife, Dr. Jasmine Rahman, a Senior Medical and Health Officer. The inquiry was initiated based on an FIR from the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell, citing violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act for Hussain’s possession of assets exceeding his known income sources by Rs 8.97 crore, which is 191.50% of his acknowledged income. Investigations revealed that Hussain and his wife purchased multiple properties above their registered values to hide the true origin of the funds, with substantial cash amounts unaccounted for. Properties were often registered under family members’ names to further obscure ownership and facilitate income generation through rental income. The ED found large cash deposits totaling Rs. 11.91 lakh in Hussain’s accounts and Rs. 59.89 lakh in his wife’s accounts.
