Nagaland is set to implement an Early Warning System (EWS) to strengthen disaster preparedness and provide timely alerts for natural calamities. The initiative aims to improve response measures and mitigate risks associated with extreme weather events and geological hazards.
The decision follows a request by Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak, to which Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh responded with immediate support. The proposed system will issue crucial warnings for earthquakes, heavy rainfall, heatwaves, lightning strikes, landslides, and other disasters that frequently impact the state.
Nagaland, being prone to natural calamities due to its geographical and climatic conditions, stands to benefit significantly from this advanced alert system. Officials believe the EWS will help safeguard lives and property by enabling authorities and residents to take timely precautionary measures.
Expressing gratitude for the swift approval, MP Phangnon Konyak underscored the importance of disaster preparedness in a region that frequently faces environmental challenges. “This system will be a game-changer in ensuring early detection and mitigation of disasters in Nagaland,” she stated.
